In recent years, the UK has witnessed a remarkable rise in pet ownership, a trend that has resonated deeply with communities across the country – including our very own Bolton.
Whether it’s the comforting purr of a cat, the loyal companionship of a dog, or the gentle rustle of a hamster in its cage, more people than ever are sharing their homes with animals.
A National Love for Pets
According to UK Pet Food, over 17 million households across the UK now own a pet.
Dogs top the list, with an estimated 13.5 million in the country, while cats number around 10.8 million. Interestingly, small pets – such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rats – also maintain a solid presence, with over 1.5 million small mammals owned as pets across the UK. Their appeal is particularly strong among families with children and people living in smaller homes or rented accommodation.
This surge in pet ownership has been linked to lifestyle shifts, especially during and after the pandemic. With many working from home or spending more time indoors, people have sought out the emotional comfort, routine, and companionship that pets provide.
Why Are More People Getting Pets?
Beyond companionship, pets offer a variety of benefits – both physical and emotional. From encouraging daily exercise to reducing stress and loneliness, the presence of an animal in the home is proven to improve wellbeing. And as our culture becomes increasingly pet-friendly – with pet-inclusive cafes, shops, and even workplaces – owning an animal has become more feasible and desirable than ever.
Pet Ownership in Bolton
But what about right here in Bolton? With a population of approximately 288,200 and an average household size of 2.4, there are roughly 120,000 households in the borough.
Based on national averages, we can estimate that Bolton is home to:
- Around 43,200 dogs (36% of households)
- Roughly 43,200 cats, considering both cat ownership rates and multi-cat homes
- Approximately 7,000 to 10,000 small pets, including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats, and mice – a figure based on national trends that suggest around 6%–8% of UK households keep small mammals
This paints a clear picture: pets are an integral part of life in Bolton, bringing joy and comfort to thousands of households across the borough.
Looking Ahead
As pet ownership continues to grow, so too does the demand for services and products to support them – from vets and pet groomers to pet-friendly rentals and ethical pet food. Bolton is already adapting to these shifts, with local businesses and community initiatives stepping up to support animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
Whether you’re a dog walker in the Westhoughton fields, a cat lover in Horwich, or a proud hamster parent in Farnworth, one thing’s for sure – pets are more than companions. They’re family.
