How Was My Pet Treated? Questions Every Pet Owner Should Ask

How Was My Pet Treated? Questions Every Pet Owner Should Ask |

When we say goodbye to a beloved pet, we place an enormous amount of trust in the people caring for them. We assume they'll be treated with dignity, compassion and respect from the moment they leave our arms until they are returned home.

Recent reports and an ongoing investigation involving another pet cremation provider have understandably left many pet owners asking an important question:

"How was my pet treated?"

The Association of Private Pet Cemeteries & Crematoria (APPCC) has issued guidance encouraging pet owners and veterinary practices to ask more questions before arranging a pet cremation service. While the APPCC has made it clear it is not commenting on any individual business, it says the recent events have highlighted the importance of transparency throughout the entire cremation process.

Pet cremation is about more than the ashes you receive
Many people understandably focus on what they receive at the end of the process – an urn, casket or scatter tube containing their pet's ashes.

But the APPCC says individual cremation is about the whole journey, including:

  • How your pet is identified.
  • Where they are taken after collection.
  • How they are transported.
  • How they are stored before cremation.
  • Whether they are cremated individually.
  • How their ashes are recovered and checked before being returned.

For many families, these are questions they simply hadn't considered asking.

Questions every pet owner should ask
The APPCC recommends asking your chosen pet cremation provider:

  • Where is your pet actually being taken?
  • Who owns and operates the crematorium?
  • How is your pet identified throughout the process?
  • Will your pet travel with other pets, and if so, how?
  • How are pets stored before cremation?
  • If choosing an individual cremation, is your pet cremated completely alone?
  • Can you visit the crematorium or see behind the scenes?
  • Can the provider explain their processes openly and provide written information?

These are sensible questions that any reputable provider should be happy to answer.

Veterinary practices also have an important role
The APPCC also encourages veterinary practices to regularly review the cremation providers they recommend.

Many pet owners assume their veterinary practice has personally seen what happens after a pet leaves their care. The APPCC suggests practices should ask themselves:

  • When did we last visit the crematorium we recommend?
  • Can we confidently explain exactly what happens after collection?

A recommendation carries significant responsibility, and transparency benefits both veterinary teams and the families they support.

What we believe
At Rainbow Bridge Pet Funerals, we welcome questions.

We understand that entrusting your pet to someone else's care is one of the hardest decisions you'll ever make, and we believe you should feel confident in every stage of the journey.

That's why:

  • Every pet is individually identified from the moment they come into our care.
  • For families choosing an individual cremation, pets are cremated individually, with their identity maintained throughout the entire process.
  • Whether you choose an individual or communal cremation, every pet is treated with the same dignity, care and respect.
  • We own and operate our own APHA-approved pet crematorium in Bolton, so your pet remains in our care throughout.
  • Families are welcome to visit our crematorium, ask questions and see where their pet will be cared for.
  • We offer attended cremations for families who wish to be present for their pet's final farewell.

We believe that transparency builds trust, and we're always happy to explain exactly how we care for every pet entrusted to us.

Choosing a provider isn't just about price
When comparing pet cremation providers, it's worth looking beyond the cost of the service.

Ask questions. Visit the premises if possible. Find out who will be caring for your pet and how they will be looked after throughout their journey.

The confidence that comes from knowing your beloved companion will be treated with dignity and respect is something no family should have to compromise on.

If you have any questions about our cremation process or would like to visit our facilities before making a decision, we'd be pleased to welcome you and answer any questions you may have.
