The Impact of Pet Loss on Mental Health
posted 11th May 2026
For many of us, pets are part of the family. They are there through everyday routines, life’s big moments, and the quiet times in between. Their companionship, comfort, and unconditional love become woven into daily life in ways we often don’t fully realise until they are gone.
That is why the loss of a beloved pet can have such a significant impact on mental health.
During Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to acknowledge something that many grieving pet owners experience — the heartbreak of losing a companion animal is real, valid, and deeply personal.
Grief following the loss of a pet can affect people in many different ways. Some owners experience overwhelming sadness, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, guilt, loneliness, or a sense of emptiness within the home. Everyday routines can suddenly feel unfamiliar without the walks, feeding times, greetings at the door, or comforting presence that had become such an important part of life.
For some, the grief can feel isolating — especially if others around them do not fully understand the depth of the relationship they shared with their pet.
The reality is that the bond we form with animals is incredibly meaningful. Pets provide companionship, emotional support, routine, comfort, and unconditional affection. They are often with us through some of the most important chapters of our lives. Losing them can leave a profound emotional gap.
It is also important to remember that grief does not follow a timeline. Some people may begin to cope quite quickly, while others may struggle for weeks, months, or even longer. There is no “correct” way to grieve, and no set timeframe for healing.
One of the most important things anyone can do after losing a pet is to allow themselves permission to grieve without judgement. Talking openly with family, friends, or people who understand pet loss can help. Small acts of remembrance — planting flowers, creating a memory space, keeping photographs nearby, or simply sharing stories — can also bring comfort.
At Rainbow Bridge Pet Funerals, we see every day just how deeply pets are loved and missed. We understand that saying goodbye is not simply the loss of an animal, but the loss of a companion, a routine, and a cherished part of family life.
If you are struggling following the loss of a pet, please know you are not alone, and it is okay to seek support. Grief is not weakness — it is a reflection of love.
To everyone remembering and missing a beloved companion this Mental Health Awareness Week, we are thinking of you 🤍🐾
