What to Expect During a Home Euthanasia Visit

We understand that saying goodbye to a much-loved companion is one of the most emotional and difficult moments you’ll ever face. For many families, choosing home euthanasia is a way to give their pet a peaceful and dignified passing, in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

If you’re considering this option, or have already made arrangements, it’s completely natural to feel anxious about what to expect. This guide is here to gently walk you through the process.

A Calm and Respectful Arrival

The visiting vet will arrive at your home at the agreed time and take a few quiet moments to introduce themselves, check on your pet, and speak with you. Every step is handled with compassion and respect. You’ll be given time to ask any questions or simply gather your thoughts.

Choosing a Comfortable Setting

You can choose where in your home your pet will be most comfortable — whether that’s their favourite spot on the sofa, a cosy bed, a sunny patch in the garden, or somewhere you can sit closely beside them. The purpose is to create a peaceful environment filled with love and familiarity.

Some families like to light a candle, play soft music, or simply hold their pet. There is no right or wrong — do what feels most comforting to you and your pet.

The Role of Sedation

To ensure your pet is completely relaxed and pain-free, the vet will usually give a gentle sedative first. This helps your pet fall into a deep, peaceful sleep. This stage may take a few minutes, and you are encouraged to stay with your pet throughout.

The Final Goodbye

Once your pet is fully sedated and sleeping, the vet will administer the final injection. It is a painless and quick process, and your pet will be unaware. Most families choose to stay by their pet’s side, speaking softly, holding them, or simply being present.

The vet will confirm once your pet has passed, and you’ll be given all the time you need to say your goodbyes.

Aftercare and Support

After your pet has passed, we will arrive to take them into our care, with the utmost care and dignity.

We offer a range of respectful options including individual cremation, scatter tubes, memorial urns, keepsakes, and bespoke tributes.

Grief Is Natural

The days that follow may feel quiet, surreal, or overwhelming. Grief can come in waves, and it's different for everyone. Whether you feel sadness, relief, guilt, or numbness — all of it is valid. We encourage you to be kind to yourself, and reach out if you need someone to talk to.

Our Rainbow Bridge Pet Loss Support Group is always here to offer comfort and community from others who truly understand.

You Gave Them the Gift of Peace

Choosing home euthanasia is one of the most compassionate gifts you can give your pet — a peaceful goodbye, surrounded by love, in the place they felt most safe. You have done something brave and beautiful.
