What Happens After Your Pet Passes Away

What Happens After Your Pet Passes Away

Losing a beloved pet can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re unsure what happens next. We believe no family should feel rushed, confused, or alone during this time. This guide gently explains what to expect after your pet passes away, and how we support you every step of the way.

Guidance from the First Call
From your very first call to us, you will be met with kindness, patience, and understanding. We take the time to explain all available options clearly and compassionately, answering any questions you may have. There is never any pressure to make immediate decisions — our role is to guide and support you, not to rush you.

Dignified Collection from Home or Vet
When you are ready, we provide respectful and dignified collection of your pet from either your home or your veterinary practice. Your pet is handled gently, ensuring they are treated with care and dignity from the very beginning of their journey with us.

Taking Time to Say Goodbye
Whether your pet passes away at home or at the veterinary practice, you are welcome to spend as much time as you need with them in our Rainbow Room. Saying goodbye is deeply personal, and there is no right or wrong way to do it. This quiet time can be an important part of beginning to process your loss.

Respectful Aftercare
Every pet entrusted to Rainbow Bridge is treated with dignity at every stage. If you choose individual cremation, your pet is cremated on their own and handled respectfully and compassionately throughout the process. We take great care to respect and acknowledge the bond you shared with your pet, ensuring they are never just “another pet,” but a loved family member.

Returning Your Pet’s Ashes
Your beloved pet’s ashes will be carefully prepared and returned to you within three days (or sooner where possible). Many families find comfort in bringing their pet back home — whether to keep them close, create a memorial, or say a final goodbye in their own way. Knowing your pet has been cared for with love can offer reassurance during an incredibly difficult time.

Ongoing Support
Grief doesn’t end when the appointment does. The days and weeks following a loss can bring waves of emotion, and this is completely normal. Our pet loss support resources are always available to help you through this journey, offering comfort, understanding, and reassurance whenever you need it.

You Are Not Alone
We are privileged to care for both pets and the people who love them. From the first phone call, through dignified collection, respectful aftercare, and returning your pet home, we are here to support you with compassion, honesty, and care — every step of the way
